it is quite ridiculous that online views do not count for as much as traditional television views of TV shows where ratings are concerned.
Television shows are made or killed by the amount of money that they can bring in for advertising compared to the production costs this is a fact. It is my opinion that advertising for online views is MUCH higher quality than advertising on traditional television.
From a marketing standpoint television advertising is very messy and wasteful. On the other hand online advertising is quite precise and clean. Why? because online advertising can be specifically targeted there is significantly less control when dealing with traditional television advertising. For example, if I am Budweiser I could conceivably go to an ad network and say I want to advertise on the TV show castle, to people in Seattle Washington who have browsed for items indicating that they will have a keg party in the previous 10 days. Then after my advertisement period is over I can go back to that ad network and ask how many people saw my ad (impressions), How many people clicked on my ad, how many people moused over my ad and god knows what else. Then compare that information to their sales figures to figure out impact. Online advertising gives the advertiser more control and knowledge.
In my experience knowledge + control = power. And power is VERY expensive. So if I am correct there should be more value in advertising that comes with Online television and it should, therefore, be more expensive. If that is the case then I cannot understand how shows with a healthy fan base on Hulu or on the shows websites can get cancelled.
Eh… Perhaps the industry just isn’t there yet. So Sad. I guess we will never see Firefly, Defying Gravity, Sarah Connor Chronicles, Stargate Universe or Caprica ever again.
gah the cancellation of Stargate Universe REALLY hurt my heart…
