Two Annoyances In My Life

Monday, June 13th, 2011

So as with everyone I have a multitude of annoyances in my life but there are two things, currently, that above everything are really really getting on my nerves. And they both deal with companies not listening to their main customers and income source. Here are they are:

  • Netflix User Interface Change
  • Syfy Channel cancelling Stargate Universe and Caprica

I can’t understand it. Netflix’s old user interface was beautiful. It allowed me to quickly find a movie that I was looking for, while also allowing me to wander around looking for movies that I wanted. The new layout as I mentioned in a previous entry is just a load of crap that looks like it belongs on a mobile device. But that’s neither here nor there.

The cancellation of SGU and Caprica are the REALLY annoying things. Both of these shows were perfect. Every time I watched either of these shows, at the end I spent a moment in silent reflection absorbing what I saw and thinking about what it meant. The shows were visual, psychological, theatrical, and storytelling masterpieces the likes of which we may never see again. OK I’m lying, we will definitely see masterpieces like them every year and then we will also see them cancelled every year. That seems to be the way of the world.

But you know? at least there is still Eureka. Eureka is probably in no danger of getting cancelled because it doesn’t require people to think on a higher level. Basically you watch the Sheriff’s antics for an hour and have lots of fun doing it. These types of shows with low emotional investment always last for years. But then again this is also a show that is in Syfy’s summer lineup.

I am convinced that, had Stargate Universe been a summer show as it was intended it would be starting its third season right now. Also they way that the Syfy channel airs shows is just horribly stupid. Season 1, season 1.5, season 2, season 2.5, with 6 months in between its just stupid! I am a hardcore Science Fiction geek and I couldn’t keep up with all the breaks and schedule changes that Stargate Universe went through. Friday, Monday, Tuesday and every day competing with some highly rated broadcast show. It was just stupid. It seems as though Syfy was out to destroy SGU from the beginning so that they could create an excuse to trash the entire Stargate Franchise.

Why would they want to end the Stargate Franchise you ask? well this brings me to another amazingly annoying fact about the world we live in. EVERYTHING comes down to money. Stargate and space based science fiction shows are expensive to produce. Reality TV and wrestling shows are cheap to produce. So of course Syfy is taking the lower risk option, and decreasing their capital investment in TV shows. So they are almost guaranteed to make a profit. But this means that for me, and others like me (http://www.facebook.com/SaveSGU), there will, in the near future, be no television channels dedicated to the genre that we love, science fiction.

Oh well, at least I can watch them on Netflix. Oh wait!!! arrg the new Netflix User Interface is making me feel nauseous as the titles scroll by at a snails pace. gah, I just can’t catch a break!

hah! at least for now the old layout works with this chrome extension!

Thank you Mr. CheeseGoat you are the Man! Now if only someone could make a Chrome extension to save Stargate Universe (http://www.facebook.com/SGUUK). That link is for save SGU UK You should join that one too!

Edit 6/16/2011

May as well turn this thing into three major annoyances. four days ago some hacker hacked the Save Stargate Universe page. so now that’s gone… Now people have started un-liking the page and Facebook has not done anything about it at all. Really makes you wonder, if facebook isn’t quick to fix a group page with 55,000 users then what happens when your single account gets hacked?

Psych!

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Man I just got done watching the Psych episode with Freddie Prinze Junior over at hulu.com. And I must say that, that is probably the funniest hour of television I have seen in the last 6 months. I skipped out on psych for a while but now I am back to it, and I am glad to see the Gus’s character, played by Dule Hill, has grown and isn’t just following Shawn Spencer (James Roday) around anymore.

But seriously, after this episode Dule Hill is, at least for now, my favorite actor. His delivery of all the hilarious lines in this episode were perfect. He had me laughing so hard I had to stop and rest my head on my desk. You would never have guessed that Dule Hill became popular from being a serious white house aide on the west wing. He just seems so at home in this comedic role.  But yeah watch the episode, for the most part the show does not build on previous shows so it is fine to just jump in at season 5.

I am REALLY going to miss Hulu when I am in Asia. All the video streaming sites in the US ONLY work in the US. It makes sense since most of the ads on Hulu would be irrelevant to your every day Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese or Cambodian citizen. But Netflix also does not work outside of the US, I can’t get my head around that one but whatever.

The last line of the show is dangerously hilarious, I would not recommend watching it if you have a heart condition.

peace out!

RJ on Flashforward

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

Oh my lord dudes. I just watched the season finale of Flash Forward. it is hands down some of the best and most exciting TV that I have seen all year! And you know what? Flashforward got canceled. if it wasn’t canceled then I would recommend that anyone buy/rent/acquire the DVD’s and watch them. The show ends on one of the BEST cliffhangers ever. This cliffhanger made me WANT more so badly!!! it wasn’t like one of those cliffhangers where you’re just pissed off that you have to wait 3 months, it was good basic satisfaction of a lot of the issues that came up during the first season while setting up a hell of a story for season 2. When I tried to look up season 2 air dates and found out that this season finale was actually a SERIES finale I was crushed. I actually shed a tear.

As that tear was slowly rolling off of my extremely long and well formed eyelashes I thought “You know what? I think I am done with TV.” along the lines of that thought I think am going to watch the last season of Smallville and then Stargate Universe, until it gets canceled, because seemingly every show I like gets cancelled, and then I am done.

Here is a nice list of shows that I LOVED that got canceled too early

  • Crusade
  • Farscape (at least the eventually finished the story with a movie, even though scorpius’s makeup looked like crap)
  • Firefly
  • Sarah Connor Chronicles
  • Defying Gravity
  • Heroes (although it became sort of crappy but then they canceled it right when it was getting good again! go figure.)
  • Flashforward
  • V (seems like it is getting canceled so I am adding it!) As it turns out this one was not canceled
  • I’m sure there’s more but I don’t feel like thinking anymore

I don’t understand how basically crap shows like Smallville, it is crap that I love, are still on air but the truly amazing shows with complex story lines that make you think and really look at things in a different way always get canceled. in the case of Smallville there were at least 4 seasons of just crap, pure and utter crap before things finally started to improve in season 8, and now season 9 is, compared to the other seasons, amazingly amazing. But even Smallville’s amazing season 9 doesn’t compare to any of the canceled shows on my list, except for V maybe. Gah I’m so sick of it!  Forget TV, from now on I will wait until everything gets to netflix, then I’ll know for sure that I am not gonna get screwed over with a cliffhangar.

eh I am so pissed off, I seriously feel like starting a TV boycott. I just don’t want to get excited about anymore TV shows that seem amazing because I don’t want to risk getting into a story only to have it be canceled.  So maybe just a boycot of NEW TV shows. We shall see how I feel tomorrow, maybe I’ll just go get an iPad and start buying books and reading them for 10 hours at a time.

And you know what? I wish I could just blame everything on greedy TV producers, but the reality of it is that if people were watching these shows would still be going strong. But the American Public doesn’t seem to like interesting shows, or maybe my tastes are weird, but either way these shows are canceled because nobody is watching them on TV even though I bet the more recent shows had the highest number of seeders on torrentreactor or piratebay. come on guys watch it on Hulu. And come on TV producers get more creative with your advertising, have you heard of product placement??? that works no matter where viewers get the content from.

Don’t think I didn’t notice all those Windows 7 product placements in the season finale of Smallville. And that, my friends, is why Smallville is still around. Eh Flashforward only had Palm product placements. Palm???

I’m so PISSED!!!! And yes I did create another level of the gripes category just for this post. Canceled TV shows are my GREATEST pet peeve. Maybe I’ll feel better about it tomorrow, doubt it.
