Netflix New Layout is a Nightmare

Friday, June 10th, 2011

For those of you who have not signed into your Netflix account recently there has been a change made to the Netflix layout. Below you can see both of the layouts

Old Layout:

New Layout:

netflixnew

I seriously HATE the new layout with a passion. And a basic search on the internets has shown that I am not alone. Here are some links with lots of sympathizers.

All of the previous links are full of people expressing their absolute hate for the new layout. On the Netflix blog there are over 2000 comments! most of them proclaiming hate for the new layout. So what do I dislike specifically about the new layout? here is my personal list.

  1. it is ugly. I like the nice fixed width page on a red background
  2. while it does show more movies the ratings are missing. you are required to mouse over each image and wait for the information to show up.
  3. the method of getting to the page where all of the reviews are located is not obvious
  4. the way that the scrolling is set up it gives me the feeling that my browser window is not fully expanded and there is not enough room on the page. Look at the last image in the top row of the New layout example image
  5. the scrolling is SUPER slow and annoying. My girlfriend says it makes her feel nauseous.
  6. I think the design uses an iframe or something so the navigation bar follows you as you scroll down. This means no matter how far I scroll it is still taking up real estate on the screen. (But I guess it also means that you don’t have to scroll up to get to the navigation bar, eh I dunno)
  7. When I first saw it, it made me feel like my web browser had failed to load the style sheets for the page. It just feels like a mistake.
  8. The new layout is just not intuitive at all.

So those are 8 reasons why I hate this new layout. I don’t know why the Netflix UI/UX guys would let this thing go live. On the huffington post link it seems that almost 40 percent of users hate the layout while the 35% or something are neutral. Any sort of focus group could have told them that the layout was junk. While it does put more emphasis on the movies this layout is not good for the PC version of the Netflix site. When you are on a PC and have more than a stupid PS3 or Wii controller to work with users want to have all of the information on their screen and at their fingertips.

If you agree with me, join the two facebook groups that I linked to previously. here are the links again:

Thanks and peace out!

Oh! I forgot to mention! for now the old UI still works if you use this link

I don’t know how much longer it will work but at least for now it is something to fall back on.

Gmail VOIP… I’m done with Skype!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

I wonder how many people cancelled their Skype subscriptions today. I know mine is gone. After hearing about Google’s announcement of free calls to US numbers straight from Gmail I finally had an excuse to cancel it.

There have been a few reasons why I have been annoyed with Skype over the past few months.

First, I purchased a phone number through them and was under the impression that it was a subscription but then I found out that they cancelled my phone number. It seems that I received some sort of random email from them about it but since I assumed it was automatically deducted from my Paypal account so I ignored it. OK, I’ll admit this one is sort of my fault. Anyways on to the second reason!

Second, the other day (2 weeks ago or so) I opened up my Fring application, on my Nexus One, to find that Skype was mysteriously removed from it. As it turns out there was some sort of law suit, or something, that stopped Fring from using Skype in their application.

This brings me to my third and final gripe. Since I could no longer use Skype on Fring I figured ok well I can at least get the Skype application. Because why would they stop Fring from using their services if there was no alternative. I searched around and found that there is a Skype Android application. I go to the Skype website to download it and it says my phone is not supported. After that I looked at the supported phones and I was shocked to find out that only Verizon Android phones are allowed to download the Skype app. I was so pissed off.

I had no other real option though, Google bought Gizmo5 in November of last year so I couldn’t use that. So I was forced to just stuck with skype and figured I would use it on my netbook (Asus 1005HA) when I am in Asia in the fall. But then Google came to my rescue with this new FREE feature in Gmail. So I said F*** to you Skype and cancelled my subscription.

Now just so you don’t get the wrong idea, this is an experimental phase for the service. Google has promised that the feature will remain free until the end of the year while they evaluate whether they are able to profit on the long distance calls made with this service. So it is possible that this may not be free forever. But I was willing to pay for Skype, so I am also willing to pay for this new Gmail VOIP service.

I know that this still does not solve my problem of not being able to use Skype on my cell phone. But since Skype has become such an annoyance I have decided to stop using it and use the Gmail VOIP. A lot of the reason, other than the fact that is is currently free, is that all I need to do is open up my Gmail account instead of downloading some annoying application that turns every string of 7 numbers in my browser into a god damn clickable phone number. So the Gmail VOIP is much more convenient, also I used it twice today and found that it actually seems to work with less lag than Skype, but we shall see if that is still true when I am on a slower internet connection.

Anyways, it is time for me to pass out. I’ll have another post soon hopefully, I’ve been kind of busy moving out of my apartment and with other projects. But nobody reads this blog anyways so I guess it doesn’t really matter haha.

Peace out ya’ll!

finally…. the anti-climactic froyo installation

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

After waiting all this time dialing *#*#checking#*#* like a maniac, I finally have froyo installed on my AT&T Nexus One. I probably single handedly crashed whatever server dealt with those checkin requests. Today, after reading here that it was available, I said screw waiting for the OTA update and downloaded the file here. Followed the manual install instructions located here (substituting the file in those instructions with the other file I linked to). And now my phone is froyo-ified!

After all this time waiting it seems rather anti-climactic. The only cool thing that I have noticed is that I can now create a wireless network from my 3G data plan.  I guess flash is cool, but hulu.com doesn’t work and that is all I cared about as far as flash is concerned. Oh and things scroll faster.

Perhaps some of you will care that my exchange calendar from Seattle University just automatically popped up, I sure don’t. I guess I would care about that if I had anything on it, but I don’t.

But I am sort of frustrated because Robo Defense now runs all rough. eh oh well, maybe it will work better tomorrow. I really hope that whoever makes robo defense will allow it to be installed on the SD card because I really need to change google accounts on my phone but I don’t want to lose my score!

Now that I am sufficiently satisfied that I have the newest Google Android experience possible I am supremely happy that I didn’t give in and buy an iPhone 4. Even though the OS is not mind blowingly different and better for my purposes it is still nice to have something new and shiny!
