Nexus One has Arrived at my Doorstep

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Two days ago I said I had ordered a Nexus One. I got it yesterday thanks to free Fedex overnight shipping! Now I must say it started off as a disappointment. When I got the phone I couldn’t start using it right away like the iPhone I had to plug it in and wait for some light to turn green, which was annoying. Then once I turned it on I wasn’t really amazed. The touch screen isn’t quite as good as the iPhone or the Palm Pre, and the OS doesn’t seem as “finished” as Web OS or iPhone’s brand of OS X.

But once I started looking into things I saw that this phone is truly superior. The best part of the phone is that it is fully integrated with google voice. I can choose to make any call using Google voice and it is just like using my normal phone, the next thing is that I just downloaded a tethering app and it works! haha and I didn’t have to jailbreak the phone or other such stupidity. Finally this OS is made for the more tech savvy people such as myself, no hardcore Apple controls on how and when I can do things. And if I want an application that isn’t available on the market I can learn how to make it and just install it on my phone! Sheez that is great.

So yeah the phones touch screen isn’t super amazing, and the OS isn’t as “finished” as Web OS or iPhone OSX but the capabilities are great. To sum up this blog post I am going to make a list:

Likes:

  • Google voice
  • No Apple or AT&T stringent controls over the market
  • More interesting OS
  • Micro SD card that is accessible on PC as USB mass storage!
  • can increase the size of my storage without buying a new phone!
  • removable battery

Whatevers:

  • Touch screen is not great as the iPhone (still very good though, it’s not like the Samsung Omnia)
  • OS not as “finished”
  • Those buttons at the bottom can be hard to press

That’s all folks I’ll catch you on the flip side! Peace!

Nexus One on AT&T

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

I finally have a reason to bring this blog back from the dead.

Today Google announced a version of the Nexus One that works on AT&T’s 3 G frequency. I would have a Nexus One long ago but I did not like the prospect of being stuck on edge all the time. oddly enough I heard this from a guy I was sitting next to in my business law class. This is not an excuse but I was happily waiting for the Dell mini 3i to come out on AT&T to switch phones so I wasn’t really paying attention to the smart phone landscape.

Anyways as soon as I heard the good news I immediately went to http://www.google.com/phone and bought one for 529 dollars plus tax. I am desperate to get away from my iPhone so I was willing to bite the bullet and get the Nexus one. In the battle for cell phone supremacy in the mind of the Ranting Jamaican it seems that Google is currently in the lead. We shall see if Google’s Nexus one can defeat the iPhone, I hope it does because I am getting REALLY tired of this iPhone thing.

That’s all for now folks. I’ll post more on this thing once I get it, it should be soon since Google seemingly gives everyone free Fedex overnight shipping.

RJ is so embarrassed!

So remember all my rantings about the iPhone and how the palm pre was better? Well I was somewhat correct and somewhat incorrect. The software on the Palm Pre is WAY better, I mean WAY better. But the iPhone hardware is way better than the Palm Pre. So long story short I now have an iPhone 3G S. Your probably thinking “but you hat iTunes so much! what do you hate more than iTunes?” Well I’ll tell you!

I was willing to deal with my single stuck pixel, I was willing to deal with the short battery life, and I even would have been able to deal with the lack of visual voice mail. But all of these combined with the iffy hardware forced me to go back to the iPhone. Ugh… I am so upset. But what could I do? I heard so many bad things about the hardware! One of my friend’s phones randomly restarts when it is shaken, and half of the people I know who have pre’s have stuck pixels! I just can’t deal with that kind if problematic hardware especially since it is so important that I stay connected.

But now… I am stuck with the iPhone. All I can do is one task at a time, it sucks. It is a pain in the ass. But at least this phone has a respectable battery life and is not extremely sluggish when opening apps and what not.

The Palm Pre was just not ready to be released. The software us complete enough and I would say better than the iPhone’s by leaps and bounds but the hardware I think is more important when you compare the iPhone and Pre. Because the iPhone is still very functional and has complete and good hardware.

So now I am done rationalizing! Peace out ya’ll!!

Oh and by the way this was written on an iPhone 3G S.
