Cakes Can Be Deceiving!

You see the cake pictured above? This thing looks like the picture of yummy chocolate goodness. Why would you doubt it? this little 3.5 inch cake is so deceiving it should be illegal! everything about it invites you in. The perfect roundness of it, the perfect looking frosting. But then you take a bite and oh my jeebus it is horrible! oh the horror! the suffering! it tastes like it is made of really, and I mean REALLY, dark chocolate, I would say like the 90% chocolate dark chocolate. Nobody in the US would like this. Except, maybe, for my former boss. He at least pretended to love dark chocolate abominations, such as some candy that was 100% dark chocolate.

As for the rest of us this cake is horrible because it was like they made it with everything that they should make a cake out of and then instead of putting like half a cup of sugar in it they put half a tablespoon and called it a day. Jeez it was bad!

Unfortunately this is normal fare for Taipei. Even when we went to Dunkin’ Donuts, the donuts were lacking in sugar. ugh I guess the people here in Taiwan do not need much sugar. But I do! If you are ever in Taipei and you like cakes that are sweet do not go to black as chocolate. If you DO happen to like cakes that taste like they are made of 90% dark chocolate then please be my guest and go over to http://www.blackaschocolate.com//english/ and order a cake you will not be disappointed.

Jeez that was such an odd cake I had to write a blog entry about it.

This is the Ranting Jamaican signing off from Taipei… peace.

RJ says “You’re in trouble now!” to the Tobacco Industry

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Now I am not one of those people that subscribes to the belief that President Obama is the second coming, or that he is the best thing since sliced bread. Although I did vote for him, it was mainly because looking at the alternatives I thought it would be morally irreprehensible if I voted in any other way. But anyways that is neither here nor there.

All of my experience of the world outside of my bubble in the United States has been in Taiwan and Japan (England doesn’t count, I was only like 9 years old). From these two countries I have learned that we, in the US (the places I have been at least), are probably the most hardcore about limiting the sale of Tobacco and just making things difficult for the Tobacco industry in general.

Did you know that in Japan people can still smoke inside of restaurants? it is so dumb. The restaurants there have smoking and non smoking sections but there is no division between the sections. there might be a partial wall or something stupid, but nothing that keeps the smell or the toxic fumes from going into the smoking section. Here in Taipei there is no smoking allowed in public locations but there are WAY WAY WAY more smokers here than in the US.

But just because we are ahead of the game doesn’t mean that we should be dilly dallying. Oh Jeebus I just took a bite of this dessert that my girlfriend bought and it is what I would imagine a cheesy  cardboard turd would taste like. If you have American taste buds do not buy Taiwanese desserts they have way less sugar than their US counterparts.  ugh that was bad. Anyways where was I? oh yes dilly dallying! I think that some federal legislation is overdue and it has been for a while. But I just read that there has been some legislation in congress… uuuugggh my girlfriend bought more than one type and I just tried the second one oh jeebus this one is worse!… Oh yes there was legislation in congress that has been passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate that will add some hurt to the world of tobacco companies. The best part is that President Obama has promised to sign it! Last year President Bush (ugh it hurts to type that) threatened to veto it.

The most important part of this bill is that the FDA will now be able to regulate what goes into cigarettes. Although they will not be able to totally ban nicotine ( the substance that makes cigarettes so addictive) they will be able to get rid of many other carcinogenic chemicals used in cigarettes. If you want more information on the bill you can get it here. The fact the Obama has promised to sign this makes me feel even better about my choice to vote for him.

Yes! finally something good out of congress. This is a step in the right direction, now only if they could do something about this healthcare nightmare in the US. I don’t know what I am going to do when I am in business school next year. Personally I want a national healthcare system like many of the countries in Europe and Canada. Jeez, if Canada can do it why can’t we? Who cares if crazy rich republicans say it is socialist. If socialism will give me good healthcare that won’t put me into bankruptcy then I am all for it!

More power to the people and not the healthcare corporations! Peace out ya’ll! I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m out, I’m OUT!

RJ’s GuangHua Electronics Market Expedition

Friday, June 12th, 2009

So today I went to GuangHua. It was another wonderful Guanghua experience. As usual I went there and I was amazed by all the electronics sold at ever so slightly less than United States prices. But this time I had a purpose. I wanted an MP3 player and some speakers.

The Speakers were some cheap ass Logitech crap. They were $14 dollars, but they were small and they got the job done, whatever. But with the MP3 player, I knew what I was looking for. Here is a picture of what I got. Oh and I got it for 860 NTD ($26 dollars and something cents)

So now you are probably thinking. The pigs are flying and hell is freezing over because I have finally bought an iPod. But you would be wrong, dead wrong in fact. To the untrained eye this may seem like an iPod but if you look closely at the first picture you will notice something. The real iPod Nano has a widescreen for showing widescreen movies (who would want to watch a movie on something so tiny? I don’t know). This fakePod, as I will call it, has a normal aspect ratio screen and it isn’t even centered, it has a sort of left align.

In the second picture you will notice that it doesn’t have one of those stupid Apple proprietary plugs. It is a normal and CHEAP mini-usb plug.  So if you want to be a poser like me and pretend that you can afford nice things like iPods go to Guanghua the next time your in Taiwan and buy a fakePod.

Anywho, this thing can do all the things that an iPod Nano can do but there are a few stupid things about it.

  1. The manual and all software that comes with it is in Chinese
  2. You have to convert all videos to AMV (I’ve never heard of it either).
  3. The warranty is only good in Taiwan (who cares it was 26 dollars)

But the pluses far outweigh these odd things. Well there is really only one thing about this thing that is better than an iPod Nano. With my 2 gigabyte fakePod I will NEVER need iTunes. And that, my friends, is what it’s all about!

Man they had so many fake MP3 players there it kind of makes me wonder what other fake junk I can get there. hmmm…… anyways peace out.

Zip it up and Zip it out!
