I HATE HATE HATE 3D Movies

Monday, December 27th, 2010

So today we had planned to see Megamind since it FINALLY came out in Hong Kong on December 23rd, my birthday. We looked at the times and there was a showing a 9:10 and it was not in 3D! So we woke up this morning, fearing that we would miss it we looked up the times to find that online it showed the movie as being in Cantonese. I can’t complain about that, I’m in Hong Kong. So then we went over to the AMC website, yes there are AMC theaters in Hong Kong, only to find out that AMC only had 3D versions of Megamind. So I just said forget it.

I HATE 3D movies. I have to be really bored and desperate to want to see a 3D movie. First of all I really don’t think it adds anything positive to the movie experience. I think the only time where I thought “this is not totally stupid” was when there was some dust floating around on screen after that huge tree got bombed to oblivion in Avatar. The dust actually seemed like it was in my face. This, although somewhat interesting, is quite a stupid thing to add to a movie since nobody wants to think there is a crap load of dust in their face. Second, on my California Drivers License it says “RSTR:CORR LENS,” which means I need glasses. This means that I look like one hell of an idiot wearing 3D glasses on top of my real glasses. Yes I could wear contacts but I hate those too, they make my eyes all dry. Third, when I wear the 3D glasses I get this weird indescribably odd feeling in the middle of my forehead. An hour and a half of this gets mighty annoying (over 2 hours for avatar).

But the biggest reason why I hate 3D movies is because it is just another way to get more money out of movie goers while adding very little, if anything, to the experience. In most of the 3D movies that I have seen, very few of the scenes would have even benefitted from the “3D” effect. So really, in the US you are adding $5 on top of your already expensive movie ticket to put on some stupid looking glasses and see some minor 3D effect on a few action scenes out of the 2 hours of that particular movie experience.

This, in my humble opinion, is just wrong.

So anyways, back to Megamind, now I will not be seeing this movie in the theaters because it will probably be out of the theaters by the time I get back to the US in January. So now I have to wait until it is out on Netflix or something. gah, how stupid is that? I can only hope that there are more people like me doing the same thing and that by “voting” with our dollars we will be able to stop this 3D fad in it tracks.

Edit (10 minutes later): I am now bored, desperate, and heading to watch 3D Megamind… Fmylife

Skyline

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

So we just saw Skyline today. You know, this movie:

skylineposter

I think I would give this movie an F+, if there were such a grade, for the first 88 minutes out of the 92 minute length of this turd of a movie.

I knew what I was getting into as soon as I saw Eric Balfour in the previews.  I knew it was going to be one of those Sci-Fi B movies that show up on the Syfy Channel in the middle of the day on Saturday. I’m sure Eric Balfour is a great guy, but I have never seen him outside of Syfy Channel’s more cheesy movies.

Crystal wanted to see a movie, and this was the only US movie showing here, in Hong Kong, that we haven’t seen yet. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part: 1 comes out December 16th and Megamind comes out on the most important day of the year, December 23rd (My Birthday). Yes, make a note of it.

I will say that although this movie gets an F+ it is definitely much better than the movies that form my personal trio of death. These movies are:

  1. In The Mix
  2. Ultraviolet
  3. The Little Black Book

While those three movies get an F-, Skyline, minutes 0 to 88, gets an F+. The movie suffered from six problems:

  1. Horrible storyline
  2. Stagnant plot (like NOTHING happened for the first 80 minutes)
  3. Horrible acting
  4. it had me thinking of a mash-up of Independence Day, Cloverfield, Kai from Lexx, and some mid 20th century brain snatchers movie.
    1. some have said they saw district 9 in it too, I didn’t.
  5. Zero big name actors
  6. should have been straight to DVD or a Syfy channel Saturday midday movie.

Now the first 88 minutes does have one thing going for it

  1. The special effects, with the exception of one brief part, were pretty bad ass

Yeah just one good thing about the movie. And the best special effects in the movie were all shown in the previews. But now to minutes  89 to 92.

As the pointless movie was coming to an end I started to wonder, what is going to happen here? Are the humans going to win? is some other alien force going to come and bring fiery judgment down upon the evil aliens’ heads? will the military try and nuke the crap out of them again? (Yes they nuked Los Angeles during the movie.)

No none of that. really that last 4 minutes of the movie totally changed it for me. It was sublime I didn’t really see it coming. I knew something was going to happen with the character but I couldn’t have imagined what they thought up. And then the stills right before the credits were pretty amazing. Truly, the last 4 minutes were amazing. But the rest of the movie is an ABSOLUTE turd.

Although, in my humble opinion, the last 4 minutes were pretty amazing, I think you should just watch it on Netflix. It’s going to be one of those movies that goes straight to online streaming. You won’t even have to wait for the DVD to get mailed to you.

CGI blood… Really Mr. Stallone? oh And Scott Pilgrim too

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Gah so I have been doing quite a bit of work on this project and I decided that it was time for a break. I saw 3 movies this weekend. Here they are in the order that I saw them:

  1. Eat Pray Love
  2. The Expendables
  3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Now if I was to order these movies based on my level of enjoyment I would say that it would be:

  1. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
  2. Eat Pray Love
  3. The Expendables

Now Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was just a wonderful piece of art. Eat Pray Love was nice. Even the Expendables was good. But my main beef/gripe is that in the expendables they used CGI blood. You know, the crappy looking effects that they have in movies like Ninja Assasin where the blood is just squirting around everywhere, is obviously CGI and looks extremely horrible?

I will admit that the effects in Ninja Assassins were much blatantly horrible. But there was still CGI Blood squirting everywhere. Also I didn’t like Dolph Lungren’s character. He was the reason I wanted to see the damn movie, and they gave him the crappy character, eh.

But yeah, go see Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It will  be way better than you could have expected. It’s like an action movie, combined with Romantic Comedy, combined with Superbad, combined with Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Zelda, Mario 64, and Super Mario. AMAZING!

Peace out ya’ll
