STARCRAFT II IS HERE!!!!! am I excited? I dunno.

July 27th, 2010

so as my all caps title says, Starcraft II is out today. I have such fond memories back in 1998 playing Starcraft when it first came out. in fact sometimes I will just randomly say “This is Jimmy” like Jim Raynor used to say whenever I clicked on him. I wonder if there will be 15 year olds spending hours clicking on units over and over again to hear all the different responses that Blizzard has programmed in. Who knows maybe they don’t even have that feature anymore.

But of course my favorite thing about starcraft was “power overwhelming”, yes the invincibility cheat code haha. I am horrible at strategy games so on every single level I would jump in and type “power overwhelming”, “black sheep wall”, “show me the money” (this one I would type multiple times over every level), and “operation cwal”. These cheat codes gave me invincibility, the ability to see the entire map, 10,000 gas and minerals, and super fast building speed respectively. For some reason I could just never master quick resource gathering and nothing annoys me more than “not enough minerals.” In my defense I am only horrible at strategy games because I don’t like to think too hard during recreation, I just play the game and enjoy the story, cheat codes allow me to do this in a stress free manner so I use them.

Ah to be young, I wish I could go back to 1998 and play Starcraft on my friends Pentium 100 Mhz computer. Yes that’s right JUST Pentium no II, or III, or 4, and yes I meant Mhz not Ghz. We would sit there using starcraft as a ghetto benchmarking tool by counting the number of times the loading text would blink while the game was starting up. Man I thought I was so bad ass when it only blinked 3 times on my Dual Pentium III 600 Mhz machine. Of course now my computer (AMD phenom II X2 550 Black Edition, with 4 gigs ram and ati HD 5770) is so fast, there isn’t even an opportunity for the loading text to blink haha. Oh my, those were the days!

Now I am thinking about whether or not to buy Starcraft II. I am not a serious gamer in any  way shape or form but I feel like I want to go pick it up just so I can feel like it is 1998 again with my new Starcraft game. We shall see… I will decide by the end of the day.

But before I leave you, time for the gripes!!

  1. dude wtf! they announced this thing like 3 years ago! I forgot about that, this makes the wait for Android Froyo (2.2) seem like a cakewalk. Blizzard needs to learn how to announce things when the release date is near. Sheez.
  2. why has it taken so long since the first Starcraft!? 12 years since Starcraft and 11 years since Brood War. Jesus that is ridiculous. Blizzard has been missing out on some serious opportunities here while they were focusing on WoW. I feel as though if they made an SC2 earlier it would have been insanely profitable. The masses still play Starcraft right now and it is twelve years old! Blizzard should have found a way to capitalize on this market earlier. If they weren’t going to design a game from the ground up they should have at least shown some love to the fans with a few cheapo expansion packs or something. I would have bought them.
  3. WTF, why are they splitting it up into three games? 3 god damn years since announcing it and god knows how long before the announcement wasn’t long enough to put a full game together? I think it was enough time and this is a blatant ploy to charge 59.99 x 3 instead of just once. But who knows, I may be updating this to say “wow this is like an entire Terran game” after I try it.

So anyways, it’s time for me to go. later dudes.

update [7/27/10 – 10:00pm]:

so I decided to not buy Starcraft II. First since I will be selling my PC very soon I don’t think it would be a good move to buy it and then be unable to play it. I will be moving from my Phenom II down to an Asus Eee PC 1005HA as soon as my summer school at Seattle University is over on August 14th. So if you would like to buy a powerhouse machine with an 80 gig raptor drive, a 750 gig seagate drive, a phenom II X2 550, 4 gigs ram, an ATI HD 5770, and a WEI of 5.9 let me know! So anyways there’s that reason.

Another reason is that considering how the game, or should I say, gameS are structured the price is INSANELY high. This first game is $59.99 and that is for 1/3rd of the game which really means 1/3rd storyline. You can still play as Zerg and Protoss but their campaigns are not included in this first game, Wings of Liberty. I have read on the internets that there will be two more games, one for the Zerg and one for the Protoss. I think it is safe to assume that these games will be just as pricey. This would suggest a $180 price tag for the complete game. I totally disagree with that pricing, and I can’t afford it! I have to continue paying for this non-profitable blog, I can’t be buying $180 dollar games!

The last reason is that I am now philosophically opposed to some of the “features” of the game. Since I posted earlier I have had a chance to do some more thorough research on the game and here are some new reasons why I will not be spending on it. They have taken some ridiculous safety precautions to stop piracy even though it is completely impossible to do that and some other things, here is a list of what I can remember:

  1. The availability of premium units for purchase, I mean purchase with real world money not Minerals and Vespene Gas.
  2. The activation over the internet requirement, which was an annoying part of Red Alert 3 as well, another part of this is that the game periodically re-activates so an internet connection is required. The main reason why I am so against this is because they spend so much resources developing these anti-piracy and if you look on piratebay or torrentreactor you can already download and play Starcraft II for free. So obviously it is not stopping the piracy and on top of that it is inconveniencing the customer. So to sum up you have an ineffectual intellectual property protection measure that is negatively affecting the customer’s experience of the game. And in my case it is even on of the things stopping me from buying the game.
  3. Internet Connection is one of the system requirements
  4. if you want to play offline you are forced to play the game as a guest. A guest on your own computer which is running Blizzards software which you PURCHASED. Furthermore you cannot sync your local guest account with you Battle.Net account so once you play offline you are pretty much gonna stay offline
  5. As mentioned earlier the SUPER high price (this one I am not sure about, perhaps the movie content makes it worthwhile, or maybe the next two games will be cheaper?)
  6. removal of LAN play
  7. omission of spawn feature, but this makes sense when coupled with the removal of LAN play.

To be honest I am severely pissed off about this stuff because I am looking at the trailers for the game with the in-game movie previews and jesus it looks absolutely positively BAD ASS. But I just can’t get myself to buy it. Perhaps I will wait until there is more information on the pricing of the next two games and then re-evaluate my decision. But for now I am thinking that I will wait 5 years until the game is 19.99 for all the campaigns.

So to answer the question posed in the title. No I am not excited.

Got My Netbook! oh yeah! Asus 1005HA

July 24th, 2010

So I just got my Asus 1005HA that I spoke about in my last post. So far I really like it. It is a bit slow but for 269.99 I can’t expect much. So here is what I did as soon as I got it.

So first I pulled it out of the box and then before even turning it on I installed a 2 gig stick of 800 Mhz ddr2, which of course required me to get rid of the 1 gig stick that was in there. Then I proceeded to turn on the machine and ….. nothing. Powered up and just had some LED’s light up but nothing on the screen. Uh Oh did I get a dud? No!

It looked as though the ram was in properly but it was actually not seated correctly. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the ram for s***s and giggles and I got the Eee PC splash screen. Yay! right? No!

When you first turn on the machine it requires that you leave the original 1 gig stick of ram in there for the initial setup. With the new 2 gig stick I got some sort of checksum fail error. Gah! so I was like wtf is this? once again for s***s and giggles I just said maybe it’s the ram! So I put the 1 gig stick back in and I got to go through the initial setup process which took about 30 minutes. This really sucked because I just wanted to do a fresh install of Windows 7 ultimate on it anyways but I had to go through this setup junk.

So finally the setup process was done so I turned off the netbook and once again installed the 2 gigs ram. This time it worked but when I got back into Windows 7 starter it still said 1 gig of ram. After verifying that Win 7 starter could register 2 gigs of ram I restarted it and it showed 2 gigs.

Now, secure in the knowledge that everything was working properly I installed Windows 7 Ultimate on this thing. It took literally 1.5 hours, which is new for me because as is my usual method I i nstalled it from a hard drive which is usually much faster. But this is a 269 dollar PC so the slowness is to be expected.

After the install I connected my external DVD-RW to the computer and opened up the Asus software disk. Asus has these instALL utilities (get it? install all, instALL lol), one installed all the drivers and the other installed all the utilities. it was a quick 10 minutes process. Other than win 7 ultimate having Aero enabled you can’t tell the difference.

I must say that after getting through this somewhat annoying setup process, this is an amazing little machine. It is actually pretty speedy for what I want to do. I don’t really watch much HD content so that is not a big deal at all. The only little issue that I have is that Hulu is a bit iffy. If I even move the mouse while watching a video on there, it starts to skip and junk. But I am going to Asia soon, Hulu does not work over there. But I will say this, Netflix works wonderfully even in full screen. Perhaps Mr. Jobs was right, Hulu uses flash and it skips on this notebook, but Netflix which forces you to download Microsoft’s Silverlight works like a charm, no skipping no nothing.

Whatever, screw that, even if it skips I still want flash on my Nexus One. I like having the option.

But anyways as far as using windows 7 features like search, Aer0 and browsing this machine is great! And it is last years model haha. Perhaps I will test some HD video on it and update this post, we shall see. I am in the process of copying 750 gigs of content over to my portable 1 tb drive so I don’t want to try pulling HD content off of my desktop right now.

oh I almost forgot, the keyboard on this thing is not all that bad. Lenovo’s offerings, the s10-3 and the 100XE, seem to have much better keyboards. But after about 30 minutes of use I am already successfully touch typing on this 1005HA in the dark as I type this post. So it is actually a pretty good keyboard for a netbook. Oh, and I am SO happy about this button in the upper left that turns off the touchpad. REALLY useful while typing for long periods of time. I think the newer models have an expressgate button in its place but you can still turn off the touchpad by pressing FN and one of the function keys at the top of the keyboard.

so for now, peace out. And if you are looking into a netbook right now look at the Asus 1005HA-PU17-BK it is last year’s top of the line Eee PC netbook and Newegg has it for 279.99 right now. Who knows how long that deal will last! Tigerdirect’s deal is already gone!

Recent Purchases

July 20th, 2010

I don’t know if I have mentioned this on here yet but starting September 12th I will be leaving the US for 3 months again. This time we will be gone from September 12, 2010 to January 1, 2011. For the first month or so we will be backpacking through Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, maybe Malaysia), then two weeks in China split between Beijing and Shanghai. I can’t wait to go to the world expo! I am pretty excited about this trip and have recently started making preparations. I think three weeks ago we bought our tickets so now that dates are set in stone. But this stone only costs $100 dollars to modify so that’s cool. And I have started buying stuff!

Electronics!

Since I will be moving around a lot I have decided that my X61 tablet is just too big. Soon (next week) I will be selling it and I have already ordered my replacement laptop. It should be arriving this Friday. I had a really hard time deciding which one to buy. In the end I decided on the Asus Eee PC 1005HA. Yes I know it is last years model but I decided on it anyways.

At first I was looking at this year’s Eee PC netbooks and trying to decide between the 1001P and the 1005PE. The only things I cared about that separated the two were the 1005PE had 3 hours extra battery life,  bluetooth, and wireless N. The battery life on the 1001P is rated at 11 hours and, you guessed it, the 1005PE comes in rated at 14. I was struggling for a few days wondering how important these extra goodies were for my purposes. I then decided that none of these could justify my paying the extra 80 bucks for the 1005PE. But then when I was about to buy the 1001p I saw that Tigerdirect was having a sale on the 1005HA from last year! At the time I ordered it the sale price was $269.99. But as I write this the sale price has been increased to $279.99. Looking at the specs I noticed that other than the 10.5 hours of battery life and the N280 processor it was the same as the 1005PE, with a price tag that was 20 dollars less than the cheapest 1001p I could find! so I jumped on the deal!

Now keep in mind I do not care about things like hard drive size, 64 bit processing, or the performance differences. The N450 processor in the 1001P and 1005PE has 64 bit capabilities and the N280 does not. So anyways from my point of view the 1005HA was 100 dollars cheaper than the 1005PE AND I got all the extra little goodies I wanted like wireless N and Bluetooth, plus extra HD space which I don’t care about, while only getting dinged for 30 minutes of battery life from the 1001p which I was about to buy. I think 279.99 is an extremely good deal for the 1005HA and 269.99 was even better!

But anyways that’s enough about my netbook purchase.

I also decided that carrying around a full sized 1 terabyte hard drive and the extra power brick that it would require was quite stupid so I bought a western digital 1 terabyte 2.5″ width external drive that is usb powered. This cost me 139.99 I was thinking about getting one from Fry’s for 119.99 but then I would have had to drive all the way to Renton and pay 9% tax (I have no idea what the WA cities tax rates are) or something so I just ordered the drive from Tigerdirect as well.

Clothing

I am a cheap ass, especially when it comes to clothing, so I will not be buying the 250 dollar rain jacket and the 90 dollar lightweight breathable pants.

Anyways, since it is kind of early I have only ordered two things so far. A backpack and a lightweight rain jacket. Since we will be going during the rainy season and I am still pissed about the pouring rain that soaked right through my backpack when I was in Taipei I went down a sort of unorthodox route for my backpack. I ordered a medium Seattle Sports H2O Gear Waterproof Backpack. It looks more like it should be used for water rafting but it is cheap and waterproof so I am gonna try it. I’ll post back here if for some reason it is impossible to use. who knows how long this link will work but here is the link to the backpack where I ordered it. I also ordered the White Sierra Trabagon Rain Jacket from the same place. The reason why I ordered the jacket so early is because I think the lightweight jacket will be nice to wear around Seattle since it is summer but every once in a while it rains.

Edit (7/27/2010): I received the rain jacket and it is perfect. The backpack however is not perfect haha. Being a noob I thought this would work, but I did not know that these types of backpacks have no zipper. On top of the no zipper it was HUGE in my min 25inchs tall with a 14 inch diameter did not seem that big but it is quite huge. So the backpack is getting returned and I have ordered the Deuter Futura Zero 40 Pack this was last years version so it is a closeout. It’s only 40 liters compared to the 63 liter monstrosity that I am about to return. I also ordered some vibram fivefinger flows (backordered), 20 feet of rope (just in case), and some other stuff. But these new purchases will be part of another entry when I get them all. Oh and also it seems that after July 4th the summer weather in Seattle is just like Los Angeles haha so the rainjacket is useless, but still nice to have it already.

Future

Soon I will have to order, pants, a towel, some sandals. Hopefully while I am in Hong Kong the Asus Eee PC EP121 will come out and I can buy it before everyone in the US!

Anyways I have a midterm in 3.5 hours that I am not prepared for. Managerial Accounting is no fun!
