RJ’s Endeavor to Learn Chinese

June 5th, 2009

Today was the second day of my mandarin class. It was an interesting day to say the least. So I walk into this large class that I have to do for supplementary education. Supplementary hours are required to bring my in class time up to 15 hours a week. But anyways, as I walk in I see something amazing, another black guy! He looked at me, nodded his head, I nodded back, then he said nĭ hòa (Hello in mandarin), so of course I said it back. After I sat down he turned around and said “are the tones giving you trouble?” and I said “Yes” and that started off a very interesting conversation.  The guy’s name is Okendo Lewis-Gayle. He is the President of the Harambe Endeavor. The goal of this organization is to create an initiative similar to the Marshall Plan but geared towards Africa. The cornerstone of his plan is to use the intellectual capital of all the African’s who leave Africa by giving them ways to give back to their home countries. After looking over their website and seeing pictures of Ken with President Obama and Mo Ibrahim I think his plan just might have what is needed to become a reality. I am very interested in his ideas and plans so I am going to try to meet with him and discuss things with him further. Or maybe I will just talk with him at the next Mandarin Phonetics class.

Oh, for those of you that do not know the Marshall Plan was an agreement between the United States and all other countries of Europe that were basically destroyed by Germany during the second world war, except for Russia of course. This agreement allowed the European countries to borrow large sums of money from the USA in order to rebuild their countries. The United States profited from this agreement and so did the Europeans. I am not sure how this can be crafted to fit the countries of Africa since for most of history they have been exploited by western powers for their resources, but I am interested to find out. Africa is a beautiful continent and I hate seeing being destroyed by oil companies creating natural gas flares, terrorism, rampant spread of HIV and AIDS, continual political struggles that destroy the lives of so many of their citizens, etc, etc, etc.

Anyways back to lighter subjects! After the phonetics class I went to my Beginners Chinese class. We continued practicing the buh puh muh fuh alphabet and practicing pronunciation. Buh Puh Muh Fuh is the pronunciation of the first group of the Chinese alphabet and also the name of the alphabet. During today’s break I got a chance to find out where everyone in my class was from.  Four are Japanese (Rìbĕnrén), one is Korean (Hánguórén), one is Panamanian (bānámăren), and the last is yours truly (Mĕiguórén). I am the only person in the class who is a native English speaker. I am very embarrassed to say that everyone in the class knows English very well except for one of the native Japanese speakers. I really feel left behind due to the fact that I am the only person in the room that is not already at least bi-lingual. But hopefully that situation will be rectified in the near future(and by near future I mean by 2011).

Finally after classs today I was able to stretch my legs and go for a short run on the track. Oh boy it was HOT! And Jesus it was fun fun fun. I can’t believe I went so long with out it. It’s like coming back to a long lost friend and picking up right where you left off. It was tiring but it felt good, I am glad that I get to use the Nation Taiwan Normal Universities track. I am also glad that it was not raining. Jesus yesterday it was raining like crazy. I might have actually seen a cat and a dog falling from the sky. And when I say it rained yesterday I mean the noise of the rain woke me up and it was pouring until after I went to sleep. The rain can be intense here.

Oh one travelling tip before I go! If you are coming to Taiwan you CANNOT bring a rain coat. When it rains here it is still friggin 85 degrees or hotter. When I got to class yesterday I was sweating bullets because I wore a raincoat. So don’t be like me, get an umbrella.

Peace out ya’ll, I’ll catch you on the flip side! (whatever that means)

RJ’s Random Thoughts and Happenings

June 4th, 2009

Oh lord! My brain is so tired. I spent the last two hours memorizing the Chinese characters of the children’s alphabet. I don’t remember it being this hard to learn the alphabet so I guess my age is catching up to me and half of my brain cells are dead haha.

In other news I got my Red Vines today! My girlfriend and I have eaten about 3/4ths of a pound of red vines. And you know what? It was worth all 30 dollars that it took to get them here to Taipei! At this point I have 2.25 pounds of red vines to munch on at the movies. Eh I will need them tomorrow, when I watch Ghost of Girlfriend’s past. Arrg! That is going to be a struggle.

Speaking of movies I just saw the trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Oh my lord this one looks like it will actually be good. The first one was just mildly interesting , in fact I only went because my girlfriend wanted to go. But after seeing the trailer for the second one I am actually 100% excited about seeing it. The only problem is that on November 20th my girlfriend will be in Seattle, for business school, and I will be in New York City for the same reason. Jeez I am going to feel so self conscious if I have to go see a girly movie on my own. But anyways, go to YouTube watch the New Moon trailer and you will see the most AWESOME human to werewolf transition in the history of movies and I am not exaggerating. Oh I almost forgot! You can also see Kristen Stewart’s pink thong if you have a quick eye.

The girls all say Jacob looks 10,000 times better with short hair but in my opinion he looks better as an insanely bad ass werewolf.

So the basic point of this post is as follows:

  1. My brain is tired from the first actual studying I have done since I graduated from UCLA in 2006
  2. I have my red vines (Yes! I beat the system and got 3 pounds of red vines into Taipei)
  3. Watch the trailer for The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Jesus Stephanie Myers did a shoddy job of tying the titles of her books together.
  4. My girlfriend says that Jacob looks better with hair. I think he looks better as a bad ass werewolf.

Lists make things so easy to understand. I love lists. Here is a link to a twilight new moon trailer!

Sorry for this crappy post but my brain is not working right now. This is just a random stream of consciousness post that I will probably regret in the morning.

RJ on Terminator Salvation

June 3rd, 2009

I went into Terminator Salvation without looking at any reviews or really looking into anything that would color my opinion of the movie. I went in with extremely high expectations due to the fact that I thought that this movie was supposed to bring the Terminator franchise back from its untimely death caused by the wonderfully action packed Terminator 3 movie. And my expectations were exceeded by far.

The movie was absolutely mesmerizing. I sat down and I was so enthralled with the plot and the special effects that I didn’t even have the ability to eat the Twizzlers that I had painstakingly retrieved for this movie. I don’t even really know what to say about this movie because I feel like saying anything would be a spoiler. The story is pretty amazing, it is original while at the same time fitting in 100% with the first three movies (except for the fact that they still believe that events are set in stone and cannot be changed by time travel, which they did not believe in the first 2 movies).

There were a few minor things that were weird but they are 100% necessary for the movie to work and really who cares. If you can’t accept some scientific impossibilities you should not watch a movie where computers take over the world and spend all of their energy killing humans and the main character’s father is younger than him (I was very happy to see the Kyle Reese was played by Anton Yelchin who also played Chekov in Star Trek!).

When you watch this movie, and you will, you will notice something interesting about the movie. Even though the movie is billed as being a Christian Bale movie, it seems as though he was just there for star power. The real strength of the movie is Sam Worthington’s and Moon Bloodgood’s (because she’s hot) performances. John Connor and Kate Connor were pretty much secondary to the movie. Other than a few slips back into his Australian accent Sam Worthington’s performance was amazing. Although there is one REALLY REALLY annoying thing about his character he is still plays a convincing and important role in the story.

Finally, the ending of the movie leaves things open for a fifth Terminator movie. I hope that they can make this movie, I am not sure if it will be possible. Jeez on its opening weekend Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum crap beat it. Come on people please go see this movie like today, really Night at the Museum?? What were you thinking. I saw Terminator Salvation and enjoyed it without even having the luxury of my red vines!

I think that people look at this movie and they try to judge it based on the previous 3 movies. The problem is that Terminator Salvation is IN the future and is a film of a completely different style that cannot even be judged next to the other three. The writers did an amazing job of creating an original story and to the director for creating a completely different feel. Great movie.

Now if only Christian Bale would stop talking in that god damn raspy voice of his the movie would have been perfect. Come on Christian Bale, I heard you cussing out that lighting guy on the set of Terminator Salvation for like 5 long minutes and there was no raspy voice! That has got to hurt your throat and it is annoying! it kind of sounds like Christian Bale is barfing out words sometimes jeez. oh well you have to forgive some things haha.

In closing I will make this bold and surprising statement. When I got up to leave the theater I turned around, looked in my girlfriend’s eyes, and said “I enjoyed that more than Star Trek.”

Peace out ya’ll. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do! And see this movie!
